Furniture, Fragile Items, and Electronics - Shipping with Busfreighter.com

Want a great experience with Busfreighter.com? Learning what to ship -and what not to ship - using our service is the key.

Busfreighter.com gives you (very) low-cost long-distance shipping options through our partnership with Greyhound Package Express (GPX). Our customers all over the country can send multi-box shipments long distance by utilizing the cargo space in Greyhound’s 1,000+ bus fleet. It’s a great way to move things at a discount compared to traditional carriers, although Busfreighter.com service is not always the perfect choice for certain types of things.

Leave the Shipping to Them

Furniture: We help lots of people with long distance moves, but we typically do not ship furniture. Most pieces of furniture are larger than our maximum package size that can be hauled by GPX (29-inches by 47-inches by 82-inches and 100 lbs.). This means most furniture -including mattresses- cannot be shipped with Busfreighter.com.

Fragile Items: When shipping, it is smart to pack all your things securely, especially items that are prone to breakage. Even with careful packaging, however, it may be in your best interest to find another way to ship fragile items other than in the cargo bay of a Greyhound bus. For instance, a Tiffany lampshade or a box of glass Christmas ornaments most certainly require secure packing, with less bumpy travel on their shipment journey. Since not all of the space necessarily gets filled on the bus, it is possible your packages can shift in the cargo area during the trip. In this instance, “shift” could mean “move and bounce around some.” While we do our best to get everyone’s packages everywhere they need to be safely, we cannot guarantee fragile items with insurance coverage.

Electronics: The same principles for fragile items apply here. While the case of a stereo receiver is designed to be sturdy, the electronic innards are typically more sensitive. Large speakers typically have cloth covers and paper cones and other parts that may not do well with a long bus trip. We typically do not ship TVs, computers or appliances, and we cannot insure these items.

If you find yourself needing to ship fragile items or electronics with us, pack it all as tightly and securely as possible, preferably in a plastic tote, which will provide a bit more protection than a cardboard box.

Items Requiring Custom Handling: If you have a package that has specific handling requirements, ours may not be the service for you. Examples include boxes requiring that the top be facing up the whole trip, crated statues, artwork, musical instruments, heirlooms, etc. The GPX baggage handlers do their best to get all packages safely and securely to their destinations (secure labeling help that happen), but the service they provide does not include reviewing individual shipping instructions for each package handled. Neither Busfreighter.com nor GPX takes responsibility for individual handling instructions.

We can tell how to ship anything for less. We also give you lots of information about what Busfreighter.com can ship.
